My First Sidecar Cocktail

I still remember the very first time I tried a classic Sidecar cocktail.

Years ago, I met a friend for drinks at El Gaucho in downtown Portland. She and her friends were all sipping Sidecars and talking about how incredible they were.

Naturally, I had to order one too.

The bartender set the glass down in front of me and after one sip, I was hooked. The balance of bright citrus, smooth cognac, and that signature sugared rim was absolute perfection. I remember thinking, “How have I never tried one of these before?”

That was years ago, but it still stands out as one of those memorable cocktail moments.

The Inspiration Behind This Honey Lavender Sidecar

A few weeks ago, some friends traveling back to Southern Oregon from Eastern Washington stopped in Portland for the night. We met up for dinner and later found ourselves at a cozy speakeasy-style cocktail bar in the suburbs.

As soon as I spotted a Honey Lavender Sidecar on the menu, I knew exactly what I was ordering.

One sip and I immediately knew I needed to recreate it at home.

The floral lavender flavor paired so beautifully with the lemon and cognac that it inspired this updated version of the classic cocktail.

Even better, the inspiration for the honey lavender syrup came after spending a peaceful afternoon wandering through the gorgeous lavender blooms at Mountainside Lavender Farm near Portland. If you love scenic Oregon day trips and flower farms, you can read more about that beautiful visit in my Lavender Fields Forever travel post.

Why You’ll Love This Cocktail

This Honey Lavender Sidecar is:

  • Elegant yet easy to make
  • Lightly floral without tasting overpowering
  • Perfect for spring and summer
  • Great for brunches, garden parties, and date nights
  • A beautiful cocktail for lavender lovers

The homemade honey lavender syrup gives the drink a delicate floral sweetness that feels elevated but still approachable.

How to Make a Honey Lavender Sidecar

Once your honey lavender syrup is prepared, squeeze fresh lemon juice so everything is ready to go before mixing the cocktail.

For the prettiest presentation, use a martini or coupe glass.

Start by rubbing a lemon wedge around the rim of the glass. Dip the rim into a plate of fine sugar to create that classic sweet finish that pairs perfectly with the tart citrus.

Next:

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice
  • Add the cognac, orange liqueur, fresh lemon juice, and honey lavender syrup
  • Shake vigorously until icy cold
  • Strain into the prepared glass

Garnish with a fresh lavender sprig or a simple lemon twist for an elegant finishing touch.

A Cocktail Inspired by Oregon Lavender Country

One of my favorite things about living near Portland is finding inspiration from local farms, wineries, and seasonal ingredients.

After wandering through rows of fragrant lavender at Mountainside Lavender Farm, creating a lavender-inspired cocktail felt inevitable.

Sometimes the best recipes come from simple experiences and beautiful places.

Cheers!

Honey Lavender Syrup:

Honey Lavender Syrup

This fragrant syrup showcases subtle flavors and works best with light spring honey. Try it warm over ice cream or fresh berries, or as a glaze for roasted root vegetables or poultry. Lavender lends a flowery aroma, but this syrup would also taste great infused with the flavor of a different herb, such as mint, rosemary, or thyme.
